You have to operate the controls in the proper order, but it can be made to work with Photoshop CC 2014. I just did it.
Here are the exact steps I followed:
- Open background image
- Choose Rectangle tool
- Change Option Bar Tool Mode to Path
- Drag rectangle
- Choose Ellipse Tool
- Drag circle around the ball
- Click Option Bar Path Operations icon and choose Subtract Front Shape
- Click Option Bar Path Operations icon and choose Merge Shape Components
- Choose Horizontal Text Tool (T)
- Hover over the upper-left of the path, note the I beam cursor is surrounded by a circle, and click
- Choose Type - Paste Lorem Ipsum
Only quirkiness I saw was that I found it was necessary to choose Subtract Front Shape AFTER drawing the ellipse.
