Not sure if this will help you or not, but I had the same problem before and it turned out to be the USB port on my PC. It just went bad. It would work for some things, but not for reading cards through Lightroom. Once I switched the card reader to a new port, it worked fine. Maybe not the same in your case, but give it a try,
