Depends. If the file is directly accessible from the computer where the PDF is open (ie its a local network drive), then it could work (if the file is not too long).
I was actually talking about a file located either on the local computer, or better yet, attached to the PDF itself.
The script will have to be written in JavaScript, which is not the same as Java.
